Is CADD a good field to major in college?
mKsTpN0y asked:
I take Vo-Tech (Vocational Technical) school and my class is CADD (Computer Aided Drafting Design). I’m a junior and for my senior year, I’m going to take architecture. I’m thinking about going to college for architecture but what I want to know is, If I take architecture, will CADD be apart of it? I mean, are they two separate majors because I’m searching for colleges and I don’t want to pick the wrong major. Can you please tell me if CADD is a good field to major in?

Yes, you are definitely employable if you have a CADD background. You can work for the government, civil engineering firms, or architects and the pay is pretty well. Believe me, it won’t be a wasted a degree. Architecture is a separate major from CAD, usually if you want a job in CAD you have to major in some sort of civil engineering or computer related field. However, CAD is taught in architecture curriculums.
Now a days you use CAD in architecture. No one hand draws anymore. I went to college for architecture and thats what they teach you. I been using it ever since. Using AutoCAD 2008 right now.
If you take Architecture, CADD will be a part of it for sure!. In fact at my college you can get a CADD certification to work at any Architecture firm or Interior Design Firm.
You can also major in Interior Architecture (like me!) AKA Interior Design (NO NOT A DECORATOR!!!) and I work with Architects and thats all we do, CADD CADD CADD, so I hope you LOVE IT! (LOL). So maybe when you start Architecture, take your CADD courses in the beginning, that way you can apply for an internship or start working part time at a small firm. Not only will you learn “Professional Practice” but you’ll know everything there is by the time you graduate.
There’s no better learning than practice, and practice comes from experience.
You could get a certificate ni CAD but i dont think you want to “Major” in CAD. CAD is NOT architecture it is a tool that helps architects articulate and deliver their ideas. If you merely want to be a drafter just go to a community college or a tech school and get a 2 year certificate in drafting. You can work for architecture firms but i must say the pay will never reach substancial heights. If you want to be an architect you must learn far beyond drafting skills.
Architecture is about people, space, art, communities, history………
I would look into architecture before jumping into it. But I can tell you drafting does get boring and mundane…. So I would try for the Architecture degree.
Good Luck
